Smarter Balanced Draft Career Readiness Frameworks Available for Public Review and Feedback
On February 21, Smarter Balanced released its draft Career Readiness Frameworks for public review and feedback. These frameworks are intended to provide additional guidance and information to students, parents, teachers, and counselors as they chart a path toward meeting each student’s career goals and consider the implications of a student’s composite English language arts/literacy and mathematics scores on the Smarter Balanced summative assessments. A task force composed of experts from Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium member states developed the frameworks. Use of the frameworks is voluntary for states; the frameworks are models that states can alter to meet local needs.
The draft Career Readiness Frameworks and accompanying documents will be available for public review until March 28, 2014, on the Smarter Balanced Web site under “Career Readiness Task Force Recommendations.” Teachers, higher education faculty, members of the business community, and other interested parties are encouraged to review and provide feedback on these materials. A survey link is provided for reviewers to register their feedback and can be accessed at the survey monkey website .
Launch of the Redesigned CDE Smarter Balanced Field Test Web Page
On February 19, the CDE launched its redesigned Smarter Balanced Field Test Web page. The redesigned Web page organizes spring 2014 Smarter Balanced Field Test information for different audiences: teachers; administrators; students/parents; technology coordinators; and community partners. It also features a “Communications” link that contains Field Test updates and formal correspondence from the CDE.
Archived California Smarter Balanced Field Test Webinar and Materials
Throughout February, Educational Testing Service, on behalf of the CDE, is providing in-person Field Test training workshops throughout the state for LEA CAASPP coordinators and LEA technology coordinators. A recording of this training that was presented via Webinar on February 11 is now available on the California Technical Assistance Center (CalTAC) Training Web page under “Webcast Archives”. In addition, handouts that accompanied the training are available, including a glossary of terms and a chart of estimated student testing times for the Field Test.
Field Test Notification Letter Template for Parents and Guardians
The CDE has developed a Field Test notification letter template for LEA staff to notify parents and guardians about the spring 2014 Smarter Balanced Field Test, including its purpose and where to find further information. The template is available in English and in Spanish on the CDE Smarter Balanced Assessment System Field Test Notification Templates Web page.
Training Test Demonstration Video
Smarter Balanced has posted a recorded Webinar that demonstrates the functionality, specifically some designated supports and accommodations, of the Training Tests to testing coordinators and others responsible for administration of the Field Test. The Training Tests are designed to help students become familiar with the software and navigation tools they will use during the Field Test.
