Chair Baker called the Mathematics Subject Matter Committee (SMC) meeting to order. She explained the purpose of the SMC phone conference was to review the three remaining items of the Draft Mathematics Framework and take action, in preparation for the upcoming field review in February 2004.
The three items discussed were:
- Appendix C: Compound Interest
- Appendix F: Algebra Readiness
- Criteria for Evaluating Mathematics Instructional Materials
After a short discussion about the first item, Appendix C, it was decided unanimously that the Draft Appendix C would not be approved and that the current Appendix C in the framework would be dropped from the upcoming framework.
The second item, Appendix F: Algebra Readiness was changed to Appendix “E” and a few comments relating to content were made with the recommendation that staff make those minor changes for review at the next teleconference on Friday, January, 30, 2004, from 3-5 p.m.
The third item, the Criteria for Evaluating Mathematics Instructional Materials was reviewed with recommendations by the SMC that CDE staff reorganize much of the language pertaining to alternative formatting of instructional materials.
A follow-up teleconference was scheduled for the Friday, January 30, 2004 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. After a member of the public made a few comments, Chair Baker adjourned the meeting.
