Chair Baker called the Mathematics SMC meeting to order. She explained the purpose of the SMC teleconference was to review the two remaining items of the Draft Mathematics Framework and take action in preparation for the upcoming field review in February 2004. The two items discussed were:
- Appendix E: Algebra Readiness
- Criteria for Evaluating Instructional Materials
Tom Akin, CFIR Consultant, reviewed edits to the Appendix E that were submitted by Bill Tarr, Standards and Assessment Consultant. After a discussion, Commissioner Metzenberg made a motion to approve Appendix E as revised. Commissioner Levine seconded the motion. The motion was carried.
The committee discussed the draft criteria with particular emphasis on the intervention materials component. Vice Chair Munger presented staff with a new version of the Criteria in underline/strikeout format. Commissioner Metzenberg presented a number of recommendations. After a lengthy discussion with no conclusion, Chair Baker called for another SMC meeting. Members agreed to schedule a follow up teleconference for Friday, February 13th. In addition, a tentative additional teleconference is scheduled for Tuesday, February 17th from 3:30-6:00 p.m. Chair Baker asked if there was any public comment. Hearing none, she adjourned the meeting.
