Commissioner Munger called the Mathematics SMC meeting to order.

Commissioners discussed plans for the 2007 Mathematics Adoption IMAP/CRP Training, March 26-29 at the Sacramento Hilton, including:

  • Draft PowerPoint slides for the Mathematics Adoption Training, March 26-29, 2007.
  • Training Agenda
  • List of Programs by panel
  • List of Instructional Materials Advisory Panel (IMAP)/Content Review Panel (CRP) by panel
  • Commissioner/Facilitator list

Chair Munger explained that publisher submission packets were received on or before March 7, 2007, and included:

  • A total of 55 programs
  • 25 Basic programs:
    • One Kindergarten through Grade Three program
    • Two Kindergarten through Grade Five programs
    • Eight Kindergarten through Grade Six programs
    • Seven Grades Six through Eight programs
    • Two Grades Seven through Eight programs
    • Five separate Algebra I programs (Grade Eight)
  • 18 Algebra Readiness programs
  • 12 Intervention programs

Chair Munger explained the detailed and thoughtful process involved in assigning programs to panels and reviewers to panels. Staff considered several items to ensure that panels included the reviewer expertise needed to review the program(s) assigned to the panel and that the workload was balanced among the panels to ensure an equitable review of all programs submitted. He also mentioned that CRPs (a total of 14, plus one new applicant that will go to the SBE for approval in May 2007) will focus on middle school programs and will serve as a resource for the other panels (similar to what we did for Science).

Chair Munger noted the need for more facilitators for this large adoption. He reminded Commissioners that on February 20th, the Commission voted to empower the Chair and Vice Chair to work with CDE staff to approve former Commissioners to serve as facilitators for this adoption. Staff has contacted former Commissioners and has commitments from Sue Stickel and Karen Yamamoto to serve as facilitators for a Basic program. Commissioners discussed the need for facilitators and agreed that IMAPs and/or staff could also serve as facilitators. Chair Munger asked Commissioners to consider serving as a facilitator at both deliberations sessions, noting that some Commissioners had already made this commitment. During the meeting, Commissioner Tate offered to facilitate at both sessions.

Tom Adams explained for deliberations we need one facilitator for each panel; 14 for Session I and 12 for Session II. However for training, some Commissioners will need to train more than one panel. Staff explained they will work with Chair McRae and Commissioner Munger to assign Commissioners to panels for training and deliberations. For training, staff will be assigned to support the Commissioners, as in past adoptions; also some staff will need to facilitate panels. For deliberations, if staff is needed to facilitate panels, for those panels, an IMAP/CRP member from the panel would be selected as a “Reporter for the panel” to come to Sacramento for the Commission meeting to summary the panels recommendation.

Staff walked Commissioners through the agenda and the draft PowerPoint slides for training and asked for comments.

Chair Munger mentioned the pre-planning meeting for Commissions, before the start of training, at 8:30 – 9:30, Monday morning, March 26 at the Hilton:

The location of the Hilton is:

Hilton Sacramento Arden West
2200 Harvard Street
Sacramento, CA 95815

He stated that at the meeting the following items will be provided:

  • Panel assignments for training and deliberations
  • Final Powerpoint slides
  • A binder with all of the training materials at that time.

Chair Munger asked for public comments and then adjourned the meeting.
