Chair Munger called the Mathematics SMC meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. and explained that the purpose of the meeting was to review the draft agenda for the 2007 Mathematics Publisher Briefing on September 30 from approximately 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and to agree on roles for Commissioners at the Briefing.
The committee referred to several documents during the meeting:
- Meeting Agenda
- Draft agenda for the 2007 Mathematics Publisher Briefing
- List of Publisher Questions
The committee reviewed the draft agenda for the Publisher Briefing and had no suggested changes. They agreed to divide responsibilities for presenting the evaluation criteria as follows:
Category #1 Alignment with Standards (Presented by Munger)
Category #2 Program Organization (Presented by Levine)
Category #3 Assessment (Presented by Goldberg and Metzberg)
Category #4 Universal Access (Presented by Metzenberg)
Category #5 Instructional Support (Presented by Wagoner)
The committee agreed to have the audience participate in an activity about the evaluation criteria. This activity will be similar to ones used for previous publisher briefings.
The committee reviewed a preliminary list of Publisher Questions (as of 9-30-05). CFIR staff plans to work with Chair Munger and Commission Chair Baker to prepare responses to these questions. Responses will not be finalized before the Briefing; however, CFIR staff does plan to answer “process” questions by the Briefing. Also, on the day of the Briefing, publishers will receive the list of Questions from Publishers and will also have an opportunity to submit additional questions (on 3x5 cards).
Commissioners and staff will work together to field questions during the Briefing. Commissioners were encouraged to submit suggested responses to any of the questions via email to Mary Sprague.
The SMC discussed next steps related to preparation for the Publisher Briefing. Mary Sprague will email the following to the Math SMC by Sept. 21:
- Final Publisher Briefing agenda
- Publisher Briefing Powerpoint (to cover the Framework, Criteria and will include talking points)
- Final CDE Press edited versions of Appendix E and Chapter 10 (these include additional edits approved by the Board)
Copies of materials will also be available in Commissioners action folders the first day of the Commission meeting.
Commission Metzenberg requested that he and Commissioners Munger and Goldberg have an opportunity to review the final versions of Chapter 10 and Appendix E. Chair Munger and Commissioner Goldberg also concurred. Tom Adams explained the additional edits to Chapter 10 and Appendix E made by the State Board did not change the standards and that edits were made to examples to help clarify ideas. CFIR staff noted that the framework is available on the CDE Website and the posted versions of Chapter 10 and Appendix E include the additional edits approved by the Board. Tom Adams agreed to forward the Commissioners’ request to Sue Stickel.
Chair Munger called for public comment. Sara Munshin, California Mathematics Council, supported the request that Commissioners Munger, Metzenberg and perhaps Commissioner Goldberg have an opportunity to review Chapter 10 and Appendix E.
Chair Munger adjourned the meeting at 4:30 p.m.
