The State Board of Education is seeking applications from educators, parents and community members to serve on the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC).

The Committee is charged with providing the Board ongoing advice on a variety of issues related to the education of English learners.

We are currently seeking applications for the following Committee vacancies:

  • Classroom teachers including teachers on special assignment, reading specialists, instructional coaches, or university faculty
  • School site or program administrators
  • Parents and community members

When selecting members for ELAC, the Board will consider the following qualifications:

  • Direct experience with English learners
  • Knowledge of state or federal policy matters affecting English learners
  • Knowledge of and experience with California’s Reading/Language Arts content standards and framework
  • Knowledge of and experience with California’s English Language Development standards
  • An advanced degree or other training that specifically addresses the needs of English learners

The English Learner Advisory Committee meets quarterly, for one full day.


Historical Information

The English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) was established to advise the State Board of Education on a wide range of issues relating to the improvement of curriculum and instruction for the state’s English learners. It is composed of distinguished educators from throughout the state who are knowledgeable about the educational needs of English learners.
