Dear Participating Publishers of Mathematics Supplemental Instructional Materials:
This bulletin is intended to provide publishers participating in the Category 2 Mathematics Supplemental Instructional Materials Review (SIMR) process with information related to the steps that will follow the recently-concluded reviewer deliberations.
All information related to the SIMR project, including past publisher bulletins, is posted on the California Department of Education (CDE) SIMR Web page.
You are receiving this correspondence because you are one of the designated publisher contacts for the SIMR process. Please ensure that this information is forwarded to the appropriate persons in your company who are responsible for your SIMR submissions. If you need to update your publisher contact information, please contact David Almquist, CDE Publisher Liaison, at the number provided at the end of this bulletin.
Attached you will find the SIMR Panel Report(s) of Findings for each of the supplemental programs that your company submitted. Please review the attached report(s), and if necessary, respond by Friday, May 10, 2013: Publishers have until that date to note any factual inaccuracies in the Report of Findings, including typographical errors, inaccurate page references, and the like. Note that this does not include challenges to the substantive findings of the review panel. Publishers should also notify the CDE whether they wish to appeal any social content citations or edits and corrections included in the Report of Findings by that date.
A Publisher Response Form is attached to this bulletin; please use it to indicate whether you wish to appeal any citations or edits, or whether you accept the panel’s findings and will complete all citations and edits as noted in the report. Any social content citations or edits that are not successfully appealed will need to be rectified before the supplemental instructional materials program can be added to the recommended list of supplemental materials that will be posted on the SIMR Web page.
The appeals meeting for social content citations and edits and corrections will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the CDE headquarters building in Sacramento. Publishers who have pending appeals will be notified of the specific times for their appeal. Publishers should bring evidence indicating why each specific social content citation or edit proposed by the review panel should be modified or overturned. If a publisher wishes to modify a citation or edit, they should bring tear sheets indicating how the modification will look on the page/screen to the appeals meeting.
The CDE will host a public meeting to collect public comment on the submitted supplemental instructional materials on Thursday, May 16, 2013, starting at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the CDE headquarters at 1430 N Street in Sacramento, in the Board Room (Room 1101). At that meeting publishers may submit new evidence from materials previously submitted disputing the findings of the review panel(s) that evaluated their supplemental instructional materials. All comments received will be forwarded to the SBE when the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI) presents the review panel findings and his recommendations. Public comment may also be sent to the SBE in care of the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division, or to the CDE SIMR e-mailbox at simr@cde.ca.gov. The SSPI will present the list of recommended supplemental instructional materials to the SBE at its July 2013 meeting.
Following SBE action on the supplemental instructional materials, recommended programs will be added to the existing list of supplemental instructional materials programs that is posted on the CDE’s SIMR Web page. The SSPI will advise local educational agencies that those materials are suitable for addressing gaps between the 1997 California standards and the Common Core State Standards.
Copies of final editions showing corrected social content citations and all edits and corrections must be submitted to the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division no later than September 4, 2013. Please note that all edits and social content citations must be corrected and verified before any supplemental instructional materials will be included on the recommended list.
Final editions may be sent in digital or hard copy. Tear sheets or PDF files showing the completed edits and/or social content corrections are acceptable. The materials may be sent to the following address:
