Completing the Leader Schools Award

Helpful hints for the completing the Service-Learning Leader Schools Award application.

Helpful Hints

  • Contact your Regional Service-Learning Lead for advice and assistance in completing the application. A listing of regional leads, and their contact information, can be found on the CDE Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/sl.
  • Download the application and follow the application completion procedures which can be found on the CDE Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/sl.
  • If you cannot honestly answer 'Completely Achieved" or "Mostly Achieved" to a majority of the questions on the sustainability index questionnaire, you probably will not score high enough to receive the award.
  • "Completely Achieved" answers score higher than "Mostly Achieved" answers which score higher than "Probably Achieved" answers.
  • Provide documentation for your responses to questions 1, 5, 7, 11, and 20. The more complete the documentation, the higher your score.
  • Documentation may consist of governing board (or school site council) minutes, resolutions, acknowledgements, directives, school site plan, etc. Feel free to also submit news media articles, and letters of support or recognition.
  • Check with your district superintendent regarding the availability of their sponsorship prior to completing the application.
  • Make sure the application package is submitted before the deadline.
  • Be prepared to justify or document all of your index responses for the School-Site Review Team.
  • The School-Site Review Team will want to visit classrooms and talk with students, teachers, and the School Site Council.
  • You are advised to have community leaders, partners, and/or parents that you have worked with to be available to meet with the School-Site Review Team.
  • Feel free to contact the Service-Learning Initiative staff at the CDE at 916-323-2183 if you have any questions.
