Service-Learning and the Content Standards

A key component of designating high-quality service-learning activities is making sure that the service experience is closely linked to specific academic content standards.

Below are examples of how the standards can be linked to specific service-learning activities. The examples are based on the academic content standards adopted by the California State Board of Education (SBE).

  • Linking Service-Learning and the California Standards (PDF; Outside Source)
These documents describe service-learning activities that can be utilized as instructional strategies to meet California's academic content standards. They were developed by Michelle Herczog and Thomas A. Gibbons, History/Social Science Consultants, Los Angeles County Office of Education, with funding provided by the W.K. Kellogg Learning In Deed (Outside Source) Initiative administered through the California Department of Education (CDE). These documents are not official publications of CDE.
  • Find a Standard (Outside Source)
The Butte County Office of Education hosts an online searchable database of SBE-adopted and other standards. This site allows you to enter a key word, and it will search the academic content standards to find the standard that contains that word or phrase.
  • Service-Learning and Standards: Putting an End to the Hysteria
Evan Goldberg, Director, Alameda County Office of Education Service-Learning Program, writes about his experiences in getting educators to understand how easy it is to link the standards to service-learning.
