Recommendations, Elementary Makes the Grade!


The fifteen recommendations for implementing standards-based education in the publication Elementary Makes the Grade! are:

I. Rigorous Academic Content and Performance Standards

  1. Create a Standards-Based Learning Environment.
  2. Adopt Performance Standards that Specify, How Good is Good Enough?

II. Assessment and Accountability

  1. Require that Ongoing Assessment and Analysis of Student Work Drive the Curriculum.
  2. Communicate Performance Expectations and Results.
  3. Hold Stakeholders Accountable for Their Part in Students' Achievement of Standards.

III. Curriculum and Instruction

  1. Teach All Disciplines in the Curriculum While Emphasizing Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.
  2. Actively Involve All Students in the Inclusive Core Curriculum.
  3. Implement Aggressive Intervention Strategies.
  4. Build Partnerships with Other Stakeholders to Meet the Needs of the Whole Child.
  5. Develop and Reinforce Positive Character Traits.
  6. Select Effective Instructional Materials and Resources, Including Technology.
  7. Engage in Purposeful Dialogue Between Grade Levels.

IV. Professional Development

  1. Implement a Professional Development Plan Based on Student Performance.
  2. Provide Mentors and Coaching to Improve Professional Skills.

V. District-Level Leadership and Support

  1. Provide Adequate District-Level Resources, Support, and Leadership.
