Letter Head: Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, California Department of Education

August 22, 2008

Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

THE CALIFORNIA MUSEUM'S DREAMERS CHALLENGE

The California Department of Education is pleased to announce a $5,000 cash scholarship program sponsored by The California Museum, Comcast, and the California State Fair.

High school seniors graduating in 2009 are eligible to compete for The California Museum’s Dreamers Challenge grand prize—a $5,000 cash scholarship to be awarded during the California Hall of Fame Preview Event on December 15, 2008.

The Dreamers Challenge is inspired by The California Museum’s California Hall of Fame, which inducts men and women who come from all walks of life and are people who have made distinguished achievements across many fields, including the arts, education, business and labor, science, sports, philanthropy, and public service. The California Museum and its Honorary Chair, Maria Shriver, First Lady of California, want to know how your dream will leave a lasting mark on the state, nation, and the world.

Like California Hall of Fame inductees whose accomplishments are as diverse as the Golden State, this is an inclusive challenge that any student is able to participate in and that utilizes their individual talent. Entries can be an essay, video, audio, or artwork, but must be submitted digitally on CD or DVD by October 10, 2008.

To learn more about the Dreamers Challenge, including judging criteria, and to download an entry form, please visit The California Museum Web site at http://www.californiamuseum.org/ (Outside Source).

If you have any questions regarding this subject, please contact Shelly Atkinson, Education and Programs Manager, The California Museum, at 916-654-5688 or by e-mail at SAtkinson@sos.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

JACK O’CONNELL
