Dear Publishers of Mathematics Instructional Materials for Kindergarten Through Grade Eight:
The purpose of this letter is to remind publishers of instructional materials on the 2007 Mathematics Primary Adoption list to insure that only final print copies are shipped to school districts having ordered such instructional materials.
Recently, the California Department of Education has received numerous complaints from school districts regarding inaccuracies within mathematics instructional materials. It would appear that in some cases school districts may have received textbooks printed prior to implementation of the final edits and corrections. We have advised these school districts to contact publishers directly in order to give you the opportunity to address their concerns.
As a reminder, please note that pursuant to California Education Code (EC) Section 60045(a) “all instructional materials adopted by any governing board for use in the schools shall be, to the satisfaction of the governing board, accurate, objective, and current and suited to the needs and comprehension of pupils at their respective grade levels.”
Additionally, pursuant to EC Section 60061(4) publishers shall “guarantee that all copies of any instructional materials sold in this state…are kept revised, free from all errors, and up to date as may be required by the state board.”
We trust that you will find this information beneficial in your endeavors with California, and we appreciate your cooperation in adhering to California law.
