Dear Publishers of Kindergarten Through Grade Eight Mathematics Instructional Materials:

2007 Mathematics Primary Adoption
Publisher Update And Survey (Publisher Bulletin 2006-02)

The State Board of Education (SBE) is scheduled to adopt instructional materials in mathematics in 2007. Three types of programs will be considered for this primary adoption of materials for kindergarten through grade eight: basic grade level (kindergarten through grade eight), intervention (grades four through seven), and algebra readiness (grade eight). The SBE-adopted evaluation criteria and timeline for this adoption are posted on the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources (CFIR) Division Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/im/

On November 8, 2005, the CFIR Division and the Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission hosted a briefing for publishers on the Mathematics Framework and the evaluation criteria for the 2007 Mathematics Primary Adoption. As a follow-up to that briefing, we are surveying publishers to determine the number who are interested in participating in this adoption.

Enclosed is a one-page survey form (DOC; 38KB; 1p.). Please fill out the form and return it by fax or mail it to the address provided on the form. This information will be used to help the California Department of Education (CDE) determine the needs for reviewers and space for the adoption. Completing this survey does not commit you to participate in the 2007 adoption. The actual submission deadline for the 2007 Mathematics Primary Adoption is March 7, 2007.

Publishers are asked to provide both a “Primary Adoption Contact” and a “California Representative” on the form, along with contact information for both individuals. The primary adoption contact is the official person CDE will deal with on adoption-related issues; the California representative will receive a courtesy copy of all adoption-related correspondence. The primary adoption contact is responsible for ensuring that information is disseminated to those individuals responsible for meeting adoption-related deadlines and requirements. Publishers should submit a request in writing to the Department if they would like to change either or both of these contact persons or update their contact information.

The next major event in the 2007 Mathematics Primary Adoption for publishers will be the Publishers Invitation to Submit (ITS) meeting, which will be held on January 9, 2007. Respondents to our survey who expressed interest in participating in the adoption will receive another bulletin, a few months before the ITS meeting, with specific information about times and locations.

If you have any questions about the 2007 Mathematics Primary Adoption or this survey, please contact Mary Sprague, Lead Consultant, Curriculum Frameworks Office, at 916-319-0510 or by email at msprague@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

Thomas Adams, Director
Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division
