Date: April 20, 2004
Dear Members of the Instructional Materials Advisory Panel (IMAP) and Content Review Panel (CRP):
This bulletin is a follow-up to the April 4-7, 2006, training of the IMAP and CRP for the 2006 Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Primary Adoption. We thought it might be useful to reiterate some of the big issues relating to the adoption, give you hard copies of some of the questions and answers that were raised during the training week, and address some matters that will affect you as you go forward with your independent review.
This correspondence includes the following:
Remember that the deadline for receipt of samples at the address you provided during training is April 20, 2006. If you have not received your materials by this date, please contact Jean James at 916-319-0444, or at jjames@cde.ca.gov. You should also contact Jean if any components are missing from your program, or if you have extra components. In order to make sure that everyone has the right materials, we ask that you conduct an inventory of your programs within 10 days of receipt, using the submission list we gave you at the training.
After the April 20 deadline for samples, we will be sending you electronic copies of the standards maps provided by the publishers. These will be sent to your e-mail address in our database as file attachments (Word or Excel files); if you cannot accept file attachments at your e-mail address and wish to provide an alternative address, let Ken McDonald know at kmcdonal@cde.ca.gov.
The Note-Taking Guide for the 2006 Visual and Performing Arts Primary Adoption can be downloaded from the California Department of Education (CDE) Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/vp/im/. Remember that this document is for your personal notes and is not considered a public document. You may want to use the Note-Taking Guide to record citations, questions for the publishers, and minor edits and corrections you find in each program as you are reviewing it.
Several blank citation forms for legal and social compliance are included with this letter. If you need additional forms, please contact Ken McDonald at kmcdonal@cde.ca.gov, and more will be sent to you. Citations for the legal and social compliance portion of your review are due to CDE by June 23, 2006. Please mail them to:
Kenneth McDonald, Consultant
Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division
California Department of Education

Deliberations will be held in Sacramento from July 31–August 3, 2006. We will be sending another letter with travel information about a month prior to deliberations; please do not make travel arrangements at this time. The deliberations will be held at the same location as the training, and we will have contracted rooms at the same hotel for individuals who live more than 50 miles from the site.
There will be an opportunity for each panel to ask questions of the publisher during deliberations. Please note questions on your Note-Taking Guide as you are reviewing the program. Remember also that recording accurate citations as you review will accelerate the deliberations process this summer.
The Curriculum Commission and the CDE look forward to working with you throughout the adoption process. If you have any questions, please contact Ken McDonald, Lead Consultant for the 2006 Visual and Performing Arts Adoption, at 916-319-0447, or by e-mail at kmcdonal@cde.ca.gov, or Susan Martimo, Administrator of the Curriculum Frameworks Unit, at 916-319-0446 or by e-mail at smartimo@cde.ca.gov.
Sincerely,
Thomas Adams, Director
Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division
