SUBJECT: Publisher Update and Survey for the 2006 Visual and Performing Arts Primary Adoption of Instructional Materials
The State Board of Education (SBE) is scheduled to adopt instructional materials in visual and performing arts in 2006. This is a primary adoption for basic materials for kindergarten through grade eight. The SBE-adopted evaluation criteria, timeline, and other information for this adoption are posted on the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources (CFIR) Division Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/vp/im/.
On June 23, 2004, the CFIR Division and the Curriculum Commission hosted a briefing for publishers on the Visual and Performing Arts Framework and the evaluation criteria for the 2006 Visual and Performing Arts Primary Adoption. As a follow-up to that briefing we are surveying publishers to determine the number who are interested in participating in this adoption.
Attached to the letter you will find a one-page survey form (DOC; 38KB; 1p.). Please fill out the form and return it by fax or mail it to the address provided on the form. This information will be used to help the California Department of Education (CDE) determine the need for reviewers and space for the adoption, and does not commit you to participate in the 2006 adoption. Note that you can submit a program that fort any or all of the four content areas in visual and performing arts: dance, music, theater, and visual arts, but the minimum submission is a full basic program for a full year course of study, covering all of the standards in one or more of those areas. The actual submission deadline for the 2006 Visual and Performing Arts Primary Adoption is March 15, 2006.
Publishers are asked to provide both an official contact and a California representative on the form, along with contact information for both individuals. The official contact is the primary person with whom CDE will deal on adoption-related issues; the California representative will receive a courtesy copy of all adoption-related correspondence. The official contact is responsible for ensuring that information is disseminated to those individuals responsible for meeting adoption-related deadlines and requirements. Publishers should submit a request in writing to the CDE if they would like to change either or both of these contact persons, or update their contact information.
Standards maps have been prepared for publishers who intend to submit instructional materials for the 2006 adoption. These documents are to be used by publishers in correlating their programs to the visual and performing arts content standards. Each publisher that responds in the affirmative to this survey will receive a CD-ROM (one copy, sent to the primary contact) that contains blank standards maps for the subject areas and grade levels that they indicated in their survey.
The next major event in the 2006 Visual and Performing Arts Primary Adoption for publishers will be the Publishers Invitation to Submit (ITS) meeting, which will be held on January 9, 2006. Respondents to our survey who expressed interest in participating in the adoption will receive another bulletin a few months before the ITS meeting, with specific information about times and locations.
