File Structure: Class Section 2012

File structure for statewide course data, including total class enrollment and various attributes about the classes and the teachers teaching those classes effective on Information Day.

Note: This file contains approximately 1,037,452 records. Some spreadsheets and editors will not support files of this size. Most database software programs (i.e., MS-SQL, Access, etc.) will be able to support this data set.

Field Name Field Type Width Description
CD_CODE Character 7 This 7-digit code is the official, unique identification of a school district or county office of education within California to which the staff member is assigned. The first two digits identify the county and the next five digits identify the school district.
SCH_CODE Character 7 This 7-digit code is the official, unique identification of the school to which the staff member is assigned.
COUNTY Character 15 County name.
DISTRICT Character 35 District name.
SCHOOL Character 35 School name.
CLASS_ID Character 20

A unique identifier for a Class assigned by a local educational agency. The Class ID must be unique within a school by Academic Year. A Class ID represents a unique class in a school for an academic year.

A Class is defined as a specific instance where one or more Course Sections are delivered to one or more students by one or more teachers. In most cases, a Class would represent a specific teacher teaching a specific Course Section to a set of students at a specific time at a specific location. In another scenario, a class could represent one teacher teaching multiple Course Sections to groups of students at the same time in the same location.

CLASS_SECTION_ID Character 20

A unique identifier for a Class assigned by a local educational agency. The Class ID must be unique within a school by Academic Year. A Class ID represents a unique class in a school for an academic year.

COURSE_CODE Character 4 This 4-digit code is from an extensive list of assignment code numbers for teaching assignments.  For a list of all codes and course and assignment titles, use the assignment code file posted on the Staff Assignment and Course Data Web page.
ENROLL Numeric 4 Total enrollment in this class or course. For more detailed enrollment data (by gender and ethnicity), see the downloadable file for  Class Section Enrollment Record Data.
UC_CSU Character 1

Course designated as meeting the University or California (UC) / California State University (CSU) requirements for admission. This field is coded as follows:

  • Y = Yes
  • N = No
  • Blank = No response
NCLB_CORE Character 1

This field indicates whether or not this class is a core academic class under No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The field is coded as follows:

  • E = Core Elementary Class
  • S = Core Secondary Class
  • N = Non Core Class
  • Blank = Field is not relative to the assignment
NCLB_HQT Character 1

This field indicates whether or not a teacher is NCLB compliant to teach the course. The field is coded as follows:

  • A = Compliant on the basis of passage of an approved exam
  • B = Compliant on the basis of coursework
  • C = Compliant on the basis of of national board certification
  • D = Compliant on the basis of High Objective Uniform State Standard Evaluation (HOUSSE)
  • G = Compliant on the basis of the Subject Matter Verification Process for Middle and High School Level Teachers in Special Settings (VPSS) option
  • N = Not NCLB compliant
  • Blank = Field is not relative to the assignment
DIST_LRN Character 1

This field indicates whether or not this class is taught through distance learning. The field is coded as follows:

  • Y = Yes
  • N = No
  • Blank = No/Not Applicable
SPEC_ED Character 1

This field indicates whether or not this class is a special education class. The field is coded as follows:

  • Y = Yes
  • N = No
  • Blank = No/Not Applicable
IND_STUDY Character 1

This field indicates whether or not this class is an independent study class. The field is coded as follows:

  • Y = Yes
  • N = No
  • Blank = No/Not Applicable
