Dear Language Census Coordinators in California School Information Services State Reporting Districts:
LANGUAGE CENSUS CONTACT SURVEY, SPRING 2008
The Language Census data collection day is Friday, February 29, 2008. On this day, each local educational agency (LEA) in the state is responsible for collecting information about English learners, fluent-English-proficient students, and English learner teachers and reporting these data on the Language Census. These data are to be submitted electronically to the California Department of Education (CDE) by April 3, 2008.
Since your LEA is a California School Information Services (CSIS) State Reporting LEA, your Language Census data are submitted through CSIS, not through the traditional process. The traditional process is to be used only if your LEA has data to submit for charter schools authorized by the LEA not participating in your CSIS submission.
We ask that each LEA designate a Language Census (LC) coordinator even if all of your LC data are submitted through CSIS. The LC coordinator’s responsibilities include answering LC data questions received from LEA staff and the public, as well as ensuring that data are submitted for every school in the LEA (including charter schools authorized by the LEA). It is important to keep the contact information current, as it will be used to disseminate CDE announcements related to the Language Census data collection. Please update the enclosed 2008 Language Census Contact Survey for California School Information Services State Reporting Districts online at http://dq.cde.ca.gov/dataquest/lclogin.asp, or fax it to 916-327-0195, or fold and mail it to the address on the back of the survey by Monday, December 3, 2007.
If your LEA havs one or more nonparticipating charter schools, you are responsible for submitting Language Census data for those charter schools using the Language Census Data Entry Assistant (LCDEA) software, which is available for downloading from the Internet at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ds/sd/lc/lcdeanews.asp in mid-February 2008.
