This file provides the demographic data listed below. The data are collected at the district and/or county office of education level and are not available at the school level. This file is not a summary of data reported on the School Information Form (SIF).

Service Learning/Community Service Data - This section is completed only by high school and unified school districts. 

Estimated Number of Teacher Hire Data - For classroom teaching and specialist positions, the data were collected in Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) to one decimal point. Administrative, guidance, media, library, health service, or classified positions are not included. 

High School Graduation Requirement Data - Minimum units required for a high school diploma by subject area.

Student Interdistrict Transfer Data - The total number of students who are interdistrict transfers. 


Note: This file does not contain the county office of education name or district name. To obtain these data, users must download the school name file and match records by the CDS_CODE field. See description of CDS_code field below.

The data in this field indicate whether or not "Service-Learning" is a graduation requirement for 1999 high school graduates. 'Y' in this field equals 'Yes,' 'N' in this field equals 'No,' and a blank in this field indicates 'unknown.' 

Definition of Service Learning: Service-Learning is an instructional strategy that uses community service to achieve educational goals. The following five elements must be evident in order for an activity to be classified as Service-Learning. Service Learning is a method: 

  • whereby students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; 
  • which is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institutions of higher education, or community service programs, and with the community; 
  • which helps foster civic responsibility; 
  • which is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, and 
  • which provides structured and time for the students to reflect on the service experience.
