County-District-School Code, Ethnic Designation, and Gender
Field Name
Description
CDS_CODE This 14-digit code is the official, unique identification of a school within California. The first two digits identify the county, the next five digits identify the school district, and the last seven digits identify the school.
ETHNIC

This is a coded field for ethnic designation. The ethnic designations are coded as follows:

  • Code 1 = American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Code 2 = Asian
  • Code 3 = Filipino
  • Code 4 = Hispanic or Latino
  • Code 5 = African American, not Hispanic
  • Code 6 = White, not Hispanic
SEX

This field is a coded field identifying gender. The gender is coded as follows:

  • M = Male
  • F = Female
Staff (Paraprofessionals, Office/Clerical and Other)

Definition of classified staff: A classified employee is an employee of a school district, in a position not requiring certification. The numbers of classified staff do not include preschool, adult education, or Regional Occupation Program classified employees. The data are not collected in a manner that will allow full-time equivalent (FTE) reporting.

SFT_PP Number of full-time paraprofessional staff. This group of classified staff includes teaching assistants, teacher aides, pupil services aides and library aides.
SPT_PP Number of part-time paraprofessional staff. This group of classified staff includes teaching assistants, teacher aides, pupil services aides and library aides. 
SFT_CLER Number of full-time office/clerical staff. This group of classified staff are those with clerical or administrative support duties, such as a school secretary. 
SPT_CLER Number of part-time office/clerical staff. This group of classified staff are those with clerical or administrative support duties, such as a school secretary.
SFT_OTH Number of full-time classified staff in the subcategory of "other." This group of classified staff includes all the remaining non-certificated staff, such as custodians, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers. 
SPT_OTH Number of part-time classified staff in the subcategory of "other." This group of classified staff includes all the remaining non-certificated staff, such as custodians, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers.

GR_3 Students enrolled in grade three.
GR_4 Students enrolled in grade four.
GR_5 Students enrolled in grade five.
GR_6 Students enrolled in grade six.
GR_7 Students enrolled in grade seven.
GR_8 Student enrolled in grade eight.
UNGR_ELM Students enrolled in ungraded elementary classes grades kindergarten through eight.
GR_9 Students enrolled in grade nine.
GR_10 Students enrolled in grade ten.
GR_11 Students enrolled in grade eleven.
GR_12 Students enrolled in grade twelve.
UNGR_SEC Students enrolled in ungraded secondary classes in grades nine through twelve.
TOTAL_ENR Total school enrollment for fields kindergarten (KDGN) through grade twelve (GR_12) plus ungraded elementary (UNGR_ELM) and ungraded secondary (UNGR_SEC) classes. Adults in kindergarten through grade twelve programs are not included.

Description
GRADS Number of twelfth-grade graduates from the previous year. This data includes summer graduates and does not include students with high school equivalencies (i.e., General Educational Development [GED] or California High School Proficiency Exam [CHSPE]).

This is the district ownership code identifying the type of district. The codes are as follows:

  • Code 00 = Office of county superintendent
  • Code 52 = Elementary school district
  • Code 54 = Unified school district
  • Code 56 = High school district
SO

This is the school ownership code identifying the type of school. The codes are as follows:

  • Code 09 = Special education school
  • Code 10 = County community school
  • Code 11 = California youth authority
  • Code 13 = Opportunity school
  • Code 14 = Juvenile court school
  • Code 60 = Elementary school
  • Code 61 = Elementary school in 1-school districts
  • Code 62 = Middle school
  • Code 63 = Alternative/opportunity school
  • Code 64 = Junior high school
  • Code 65 = Kindergarten through grade twelve school
  • Code 66 = High school
  • Code 67 = High school in 1-school districts
  • Code 68 = Continuation high school
