Prior to 2003, there were a number of schools chartered by one district but located in another district. As these schools have come up for renewal, we said that the law "required" them to seek reauthorization from the district in which they are actually located. [Some disagreed that this was legally necessary, but most schools complied.] As a technical matter, the result gave the appearance of the school being "closed" (non-renewed) by the district that originally authorized it, and then granted a "new" charter by the district in which the school was located. From our standpoint, we handled the school's consistently, by "closing" out the previous charter number and issuing a new charter number. Unfortunately, the Data Management Division went different ways with these schools in relationship to the CDS Code. In all cases, the affected school's received a different "D" Code reflecting the new authorizing district.
