Educational funding available from agencies outside the California Department of Education. Please use the Outside Funding Form if you have funding available for educational purposes.

State

Cal Grants
Cal Grant awards are state-funded monetary grants given to students to help pay for college expenses. The awards do not have to be paid back.

California Lottery
The California Lottery's mandate, as defined in the California State Lottery Act, is to provide supplemental funding to California public education on all levels from kindergarten through higher education, plus several miscellaneous entities. Funds for kindergarten through grade twelve are distributed based on average daily attendance. The unrestricted funds are for student education and may not be used for acquisition of real property, construction, research, or any non-instructional purposes. Lottery funds based on Proposition 20 are for the purchase of instructional materials.

Charter Schools Facilities Program
This program allows charter schools that provide site-based instruction to access state facility funding directly or through the school district where the charter school is physically located and to acquire a preliminary apportionment.

Critically Overcrowded School Facilities Program
The Critically Overcrowded School Facilities program allows school districts with critically overcrowded school facilities, as determined by the California Department of Education, to apply for a preliminary apportionment for new construction projects; in advance of meeting all School Facility Program new construction laws and regulations, which is required for a final construction apportionment.

Deferred Maintenance Program
The Deferred Maintenance Program provides state matching funds on a dollar-for-dollar basis to assist school districts and county offices of education with such items as major repair or replacement of existing school facility systems, hazard abatement, and interior and exterior painting of school buildings.

Facility Hardship Grant
The purpose of the grant is to assist districts that have a critical need for pupil housing because the condition of the facilities, or the lack of facilities, presents an imminent threat to the health and safety of the pupils.

First 5 California
First 5 California’s School Readiness Initiative is being accomplished through the joint efforts of the First 5 California Children and Families Commission (CCFC) and all 58 counties. The First 5 CCFC allocated $206.5 million dollars, over a four-year period (2002 to 2006), to implement programs that improve the transition from early care settings to elementary school.

SafeState: Preventing Crime and Violence in California
The SafeState Web site contains state and national funding related to safety and violence prevention.

SB 70 – California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office
The Governor's 2005-06 Budget provided funding for career technical educational opportunities for middle school and high school students, and improved linkages between the career and technical curricula of the public schools and community colleges. Additional funding is anticipated each year through 2013-14 to strengthen local partnerships between middle, secondary and community college entities.

School Facilities Emergency Repair: Williams Case Settlement
The School Facilities Emergency Repair Account is administered by the State Allocation Board for the purpose of reimbursing school districts for emergency facility repairs at eligible schools.

School Facilities Joint-Use Program
The School Facilities Joint-Use Program allows a school district to utilize funds from a joint-use partner to build a joint-use project the district would not otherwise be able to build due to lack of financial resources. There are two types of joint-use projects that the district may apply for, which are referred to as Type I and Type II.

School Facility Financial Hardship
Financial hardship assistance is available for those districts that cannot provide all or part of their share of a School Facility Program project. Education Code Section 17075.10 and California Code of Regulations, Title 2, Section 1859.81 require a district to have made all reasonable efforts to impose all levels of local debt capacity and development fees prior to requesting financial assistance.

School Facility Program Modernization Funding
The School Facility Program provides funding assistance to school districts for the modernization of school facilities. The assistance is in the form of grants approved by the State Allocation Board.

School Facility Program New School Construction
The School Facility Program provides state funding assistance for school facilities new construction. The process for accessing the state assistance for this funding is divided into two steps: an application for eligibility and an application for funding.

Student Aid Programs
The California Student Aid Commission offers a number of grants and scholarships to help make education beyond high school financially accessible to all Californians.

Federal

Federal Student Aid
The U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid (FSA) programs offer financial help for students enrolled in eligible programs at participating schools to cover school expenses, including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation.

Grants.gov
Grants.gov is a centralized, online process to find, and apply for, over 900 grant programs from the 26 federal grant-making agencies.

Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) State Grants Program
Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) grants are awarded to postsecondary institutions that partner with high-need local educational agencies to support teacher professional development. The 2008 Request for Proposals focuses on the achievement gap in elementary schools. It requires whole-school approaches that develop teacher leaders who support sustained, site-based school improvement activities.

Improving Teacher Quality State Grants Program-Early Elementary Education
This program provides funds for high quality teacher professional development to colleges and universities partnering with high-need and other school districts. Projects should improve teachers' content knowledge and pedagogical skills in order to support student achievement. The 2007 RFP is limited to K-2 teachers and principals.

JPL's Summer High School Internship Program
This program is designed for high school students who have demonstrated a strong interest in and aptitude for Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics (STEM)

Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) Grant
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has posted the Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) Grant Solicitation. This grant is to use lessons lessons learned from other demonstration projects to establish a SC3 infrastructure that assists K-12 schools with their chemical management.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
The online Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance gives you access to a database of all federal programs available to state and local governments. You can search for funding in a variety of ways, including the name of the agency. After you find the program you want, contact the office that administers the program to find out how to apply.

U.S. Department of Education Grants and Contracts
Funds are available to (1) improve schools and meet the special needs of students; (2) help strengthen teaching and learning in institutions of higher education; and (2) support rehabilitation, research and development, statistics, and assessment.

Other

Gates Millennium Scholars
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program promotes academic excellence and provides an opportunity for outstanding students with significant financial need to reach their fullest potential. The GMS scholarship supports the costs of college attendance and can be renewed each year during the undergraduate program.

Grant Wrangler
Grant Wrangler is a free grants listing service that provides information about grants and contests for teachers, classrooms, and schools. Search tools allow you to find grants by subject area and grade level.

Grants, Awards, and Opportunities
The Office of Career and Technical Education, Indiana Department of Education, provides a Web page with links to a number of funding opportunities related to technology. The Web site links to some foundations that might be of interest to California educational agencies and individuals.

The Foundation Center
The Foundation Center offers several types of resources that can help you learn about grants or locate potential donors in your subject field. The center collects, organizes, and communicates information on U.S. philanthropy; conducts and facilitates research on trends in the field; provides education and training on the grantseeking process; and provides public access to information and services through its Web site and other resources.
