Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) funding supports unique opportunities for high-achieving and underachieving students in public elementary and secondary schools in California who are identified as gifted and talented. Special efforts must be made to include students from economically disadvantaged and varying cultural backgrounds. The Legislature supports the development of a variety of program options and approaches to identification as long as this does not diminish service to identified students.

| Allocation Formula | According to provisions of Education Code Section 52211, total funding available in the current fiscal year for GATE is divided by the total prior year Second Period Average Daily Attendance (ADA), in kindergarten through grade twelve, for all districts participating in the GATE program in the current year. The result is multiplied by the LEA's prior year Second Period ADA. No district can receive less per ADA than the amount it received per ADA in the 1999-2000 school year. No district with fewer than 1,500 pupils in ADA will receive less to support its GATE program than $2,500 or the amount it received in 1998-99, whichever is greater. |
