Funding Description

The Refugee School Impact Grant was awarded to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. Funds are made available to the California Departmnet of Education through an interagency agreement with the CDSS. The grant is designed to help refugee students perform at grade level and was available to local educational agencies (LEAs) within specific counties. Through the subgrants, LEAs provide intensive and innovative educational programs designed to help refugee children improve their English fluency and make progress toward grade-level proficiency. Such programs may include English as a second language instruction; after-school tutorials, activities, and clubs; cognitive enrichment programs; parental outreach programs; and interpreter services. The subgrants may be used for teacher salaries and bilingual and bicultural counselors.
