William F. Goodling Even Start Family Literacy Program

Funding Description

The purpose of the Even Start program is to break the cycle of poverty and low literacy by improving the academic achievement of parents and their young children, ages birth through seven years. The program integrates early childhood education, adult education, parenting education, and interactive literacy activities.


Eligible Applicants Institutions of higher education, local educational agencies, nonprofit organizations
Required Eligibility Criteria A local educational agency must apply jointly with a community-based organization, public agency, institution of higher education, or other nonprofit organization. Nonprofit organizations must have a track record of working in family literacy programs.
Other Eligibility Considerations Priority will be given to strong projects that are complying with project objectives, are making sufficient progress on the Even Start indicators and have the potential of future sustainability once Federal funds no longer exist.
