Healthy Start

Healthy Start assists schools, kindergarten through grade twelve, and their collaborative partners to develop and expand comprehensive, integrated, school-linked services and support. The combined expertise and energy of the following partners are critical to long-term success: parents, teachers, community organizations, city and county agencies, school administrators and boards, service and faith-based organizations, businesses, and children and youths themselves.

Criteria
Eligible schools for Healthy Start services include two types: (1) kindergarten through grade six schools with at least 50 percent of their students who (a) come from families that receive benefits from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)/ California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids (CalWORKS) or are English Learners; or (b) qualify for free or reduced-price meals; and (2) grade seven through twelve schools with at least 35 percent of their students who (a) come from families that receive benefits from TANF/CalWORKS or are English learners; or (b) qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

Allocation Formula School districts, county offices of education, or charter schools and their collaborative partners may apply for a five-year operational grant ($300,000) or a seven-year combined planning and operational grant ($350,000). Both types of grants may also include an additional $100,000 for start-up. Grantees must provide a 25 percent match of funds.
