Letter Head: Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, California Department of Education

May 19, 2008

Dear Select County Superintendents of Schools, Auditors, and Treasurers:

NOTICE OF APPORTIONMENT FOR THE
MATHEMATICS AND READING PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
FISCAL YEAR 2007-08

This apportionment, in the amount of $1,955,000, is made from funds provided by Item 6110-137-0001 of the Budget Act of 2007 (Chapter 171, Statutes of 2007) in support of Senate Bill 472, the Mathematics and Reading Professional Development Program. This payment is for claims submitted by local educational agencies (LEAs) for teachers successfully completing program training during Fiscal Year 2007-08. The payment reflects reimbursement of $1,250 per eligible teacher for the completion of either 40 hours of intensive professional development or 80 hours of follow-up training.

The Mathematics and Reading Professional Development Program was established by Assembly Bill 466 (Chapter 737, Statutes of 2001). The operation of the program, which was due to be repealed on January 1, 2007, was reauthorized by SB 472 (Chapter 524, Statutes of 2006), commencing with California Education Code Section 99231. The program provides funding for professional development in mathematics or reading/language arts for teachers who teach either of those subjects in kindergarten through grade twelve. The professional development focuses on State Board of Education adopted instructional materials, or for grades nine through twelve, local board adopted, standards-based instructional materials.

Warrants will be mailed to each county treasurer shown on the enclosed schedule approximately four weeks from the date of this notice. For standardized account code structure coding, use Resource Code 7294, Staff Development: Mathematics and Reading Professional Development (AB 466), and Revenue Object Code 8590, All Other State Revenue. County superintendents of schools are requested to inform LEAs immediately of this apportionment.
