Dear Select County Superintendents of Schools, Auditors, and Treasurers:

NOTICE OF APPORTIONMENT FOR THE
MATHEMATICS AND READING PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
FISCAL YEAR 2007-08

This apportionment, in the amount of $1,003,750, is made from funds provided by Item 6110-137-0001 of the Budget Act of 2007 (Chapter 171, Statutes of 2007) as amended by Chapter 2, Statutes of 2008, Third Extraordinary Session (Assembly Bill 4), in support of Senate Bill 472, the Mathematics and Reading Professional Development Program (MRPDP). This payment is for claims submitted by local educational agencies (LEAs) for teachers successfully completing program training. The payment reflects reimbursement of $1,250 per eligible teacher for the completion of either 40 hours of intensive professional development or 80 hours of follow-up training.

The MRPDP was established by AB 466 (Chapter 737, Statutes of 2001). The operation of the program, which was due to be repealed on January 1, 2007, was reauthorized by SB 472 (Chapter 524, Statutes of 2006), commencing with California Education Code Section 99230. The program provides funding for professional development in mathematics or reading/language arts for teachers who teach either of those subjects in kindergarten through grade twelve. The professional development focuses on State Board of Education-adopted instructional materials, or for grades nine through twelve, local board-adopted, standards-based instructional materials.

Warrants will be mailed to each county treasurer shown on the enclosed schedule approximately four weeks from the date of this notice. For standardized account code structure coding, use Resource Code 0000, Unrestricted, and Revenue Object Code 8590, All Other State Revenue. County superintendents of schools are requested to inform LEAs immediately of this apportionment.

If you have any questions about the MRPDP, please contact Juliet Barbero, Associate Governmental Program Analyst, Administrative and Fiscal Services Office, at 916-323-5795 or by e-mail at jbarbero@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

Deborah V.H. Sigman, Deputy Superintendent
