Dear Safe and Supportive Schools Participating District Superintendents:
I am pleased to announce the availability of funding from the Safe and Supportive Schools (S3) Program for the period of October 1, 2011, through September 30, 2014. California is one of 11 states to receive a federal S3 grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education. This grant is intended to improve school climate and safety among high schools with the greatest need in those areas.
This Request for Applications (RFA) is soliciting applications from the 59 school districts with high schools that have the lowest school climate index scores. Per federal funding guidelines, 59 school districts were invited to participate in the S3 in the fall of 2010, based on having high schools in the lowest quartile of school climate and safety. A list of these 59 school districts can be found on the California Department of Education (CDE) Safe and Supportive Schools Participating Districts Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/ss/se/ssdistricts.asp.
Total funding for the S3 Programmatic Intervention grant is estimated to be $8.5 million per year. The estimated grant size per school is $100,000 to $175,000 per year, based on student enrollment. School districts must submit a separate application packet for each of their applicant high schools.
An Intent to Apply must be e-mailed to, and received by, the CDE’s Coordinated School Health and Safety Office (CSHSO) no later than 4:00 p.m. on June 17, 2011. Please e-mail the Intent to Apply to Hilva Chan at email@example.com.
A completed application packet must be received in the CSHSO by 4:00 p.m. on August 31, 2011, to be eligible for consideration for funding. Send or deliver completed application packets to:
