Dear County Superintendents of Schools, Auditors, and Treasurers:

NOTICE OF THE SECOND APPORTIONMENT FOR THE TOBACCO-USE PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR GRADES FOUR THROUGH EIGHT FISCAL YEAR 2006-07

This apportionment, in the amount of $592,515 is made from funds provided by Item 6110-102-0231 of the Budget Act of 2006 (Chapter 47, Statutes of 2006), payable from the Health Education Account, Cigarette and Tobacco Products Surtax Fund in support of the Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program. Funds are earmarked for health education efforts aimed at the prevention and reduction of tobacco use. Activities may include tobacco-specific student instruction, reinforcement activities, special events, and cessation programs for students.

The second apportionment that is provided to each local educational agency (LEA) is 100 percent of their TUPE entitlement. The participating LEAs, and the amounts apportioned to each, are listed on the enclosed schedule of apportionment.

Direct-funded charter schools must apply individually for this program. The amount identified for direct-funded charter schools is separate from the district or county amount. All other charter schools must apply through their authorizing agency, and funding associated with the charter school is included in the district or county amount.

Warrants will be mailed to each county treasurer approximately four weeks from the date of this notice. For standardized account code structure (SACS) coding, use Resource Code 6660, TUPE: Formula Grants, Grades four through eight, and Revenue Object Code 8590. County superintendents of schools are requested to inform LEAs immediately about this apportionment.

If you have any questions regarding the TUPE program, please contact Cindy Schneider, Program Consultant, Safe and Healthy Kids Program Office, at 916-319-0601 or by e-mail at cschneider@cde.ca.gov.
