Dear District and County Superintendents of Schools and Tobacc-Use Prevention Education Coordinators:
The California Department of Education (CDE) is pleased to announce the release of the 2009 Cohort E Request for Applications (RFAs) to fund Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) competitive grants.
The RFA includes Tier 1 and Tier 2 applications, eligibility and submission requirements, and the application review process for applicants. Terms and conditions of the grant are included for those applicants awarded funding for grades six through twelve TUPE programs. If your agency is interested in applying for these funds, (Attachment 1) the Intent to Apply must be completed and returned to the CDE by March 6, 2009.
The Legislature is expected to appropriate funding for this program through the 2009-10 Budget Act. The funding source is the Health Education Account of the Cigarette and Tobacco Products Surtax Fund which provides tobacco surtax funds for school-based TUPE programs. Multiple grants will be awarded as a result of this RFA. Successful applicants will receive grants with four-year funding beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 28, 2013.
