NTPG: Chapter 11

Network Technology Planning Guide (NTPG) - Training Resources.

Although the following list is by no means an exhaustive directory of training resources for teachers, these samples serve to demonstrate the vast array of options available to educators today. A proliferation of technical resources exists on the Internet, and new users are encouraged to make the connection and browse. The California Department of Education does not endorse any particular training organization or consultant.

Hands-On Teacher Services:

1. InterNIC- The InterNIC Seminar Series - Training for Residents of the Global Village offers seminars covering a wide range of topics from a basic introduction to the Internet to managing an information network. In addition, trainers will travel to a "host" site and tailor courses to accommodate a given organization's needs. The calendar of seminar dates is free on-line (InterNIC Information Services) by either using email or going to their web page at http://www.internic.net/. New, intermediate, and advanced users are all welcome. Registration and pricing information may be obtained by calling 800-444-4345 or 619-455-4600.

2. New Technologies-Beginning Internet courses and seminars may be arranged through an organization called New Technologies, Inc. Classes cover the use of Internet tools, such as email, gopher, telnet, etc. Although sponsored through the University of Maryland, trainers will also travel to other sites and design courses to fit individual requirements. For course descriptions either call New Technologies at 410-659-0950 or send an email message to nti@clark.net. All courses require a fee.

3. Telemation Project - The California Technology Project's (CTP) Telemation Project is a new statewide program in collaboration with the CTP, the Fresno County Office of Education, and the Far West Labs, dealing with 18 regional partners. The project aims to bring telecommunications training to California educators by focusing on integrating telecommunications-based resources into site-level planning, curriculum, learning strategies, and student-centered activities. In 1994, through the innovation of telementoring, 424 teachers will receive training in a TeleLearning Mobile Unit equipped with the latest technologies. In turn, participants will share their expertise with colleagues back at their school sites. For more information about the Telemation Project, call Chris Doyle at 800-272-8743.

Online General Information:

1. FYI on Questions and Answers. Answers to Commonly Asked "New Internet Users" Questions- Here you will find the most commonly asked questions and answers of new Internet users. It is the first of two FYIs called "Questions and Answers" (see RFC 1207 below.) To access this service, connect to http://www.internic.net/rfc/rfc1206.txt.

2. FYI on Questions and Answers. Answers to Commonly Asked "Experienced Internet Users" Questions- As the name implies, this RFC deals with questions at a more advanced level of usage - the follow-up to rfc 1206. Access this rfc by going to http://www.internic.net/rfc/rfc1207.txt.

3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Internet - This RFC provides "hints allowing new network participants to understand how the direction of the Internet is set, how to acquire on-line information, and how to be a good Internet neighbor." You can access this very popular resource by connecting to http://www.internic.net/rfc/rfc1118.txt.

4. Teacher Education Internet Server - This is an on-line service designed to explore the ways in which the Internet could benefit teacher education programs around the world. A new addition to the CoSN gopher server, it can be reached by going to Network Resources for Education. Contained in the Teacher Education Internet Server are:

  • About the Teacher Education Internet Server
  • STATE Information
  • Teach-It Modules
  • Disciplines
  • Electronic Publications
  • Software Archives
  • Telecommunications and Networking
  • Interactive Resources
  • Other Internet Resources

5. Trainmat/Network Training Pack- Trainmat is an initiative of the Network Training Materials Project based at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. The materials available on the Trainmat gopher server are designed to "assist and encourage UK user-support staff to provide network training to the UK academic community. However, the materials may be used and adapted by anyone, provided the source is acknowledged and that they are not sold on or used for commercial gain." Interested teachers may access the deeply nested Trainmat by going to "trainmat.ncl.ac.uk", then to Facilities and Services, then to University Computing Services, then to Academic Services, then to University of Newcastle-Tyne Experimental Gopher.

6. Internet Guides - These basic Internet guides will help you get started understanding and using the Internet, the list includes FAQ's, roadmaps, user guidelines, and book listings. http://www.rpi.edu/Internet/InetGuides.html.

Gopher Information:

1. Gopher Jewels- This is an on-line "list service for the sharing of interesting gopher finds." The contents of Gopher Jewels covers a list of subjects from Agriculture to Weather, making Internet searches a little easier. The System Administration assumes that subscribers are either gopher developers or users. It is NOT, however, to be used for technical exchanges or for the discussion of establishing, maintaining or using gophers.

2. Go-pher It: Your Passport to the Internet- This is a two and one-half week on-line gopher workshop designed to introduce the beginner to the wide world of gopher. Training includes the basics for connecting to gopher and some gopher sites, using the search tool called Veronica, setting up bookmarks and Internet retrieval tools, such as FTP, WAIS, and WWW. Interested participants sign up by sending an email message to " listserv@netcom.com." The cost is $20 per participant.

3. Navigating the Internet - Jim Gerland of State University of New York at Buffalo and Richard J. Smith from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh conduct a free 14-part Gopher course on-line occasionally. Email registration places the new subscriber on a national distribution list for receiving a comprehensive offering of gopher-related lessons. For more information about upcoming courses, send an email note to Jim Gerland at gerland@ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu.

Directories:

1. Internet/BITNET Network Trainers - A subscription to this mailing list will provide you with information regarding Internet training around the country. To join this on-line resource, send an email message to: listserv@ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu . The command (in the text of the message) should read: "subscribe nettrain (your first name), space, (your last name)."

2. Internet Business Journal/Directory of Trainers and Consultants- Under the Internet Business Journal, this on-line directory LISTS names and addresses of Internet training organizations. Prospective trainers must apply to Strangelove Internet Enterprises for inclusion in the directory at no cost. Free copies of the directory are available on-line. But the actual cost of training varies according to the chosen organization and the needs of the client. For more information off-line, call Lindsay Fraser-Fazakas, Training Director, 613-565-0982.

Newsgroups and Listservs:

1. Networks and Community - This electronic communication is devoted to encouraging local resource creation and global resource sharing. On-line publications such as these take the form of regular free newsletters to a group of subscribers. Literally hundreds of such services are available covering a wide range of subjects. Some, such as the above, concentrate on federal networking policy, new services on the Internet, funding, and trends. This server can be accessed by requesting an account from "samsam@vml.yorku.ca."

2. EDUPAGE- EDUCOM, a consortium of leading colleges and universities, produces this twice-weekly summary of news items on information technology. EDUCOM is seeking to transform education through the use of information technology. Newsletters contain an assortment of a dozen or more short technology updates and trivia, ranging from IBM internal reorganizations to Superbowl emergency services. A free subscription to EDUPAGE may be obtained by sending an email message to listproc@educom.edu.
