Letter Head: Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, California Department of Education

February 3, 2009

Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

SUSPENSION OF THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY SURVEY

In response to the ongoing budget crisis facing California, and in keeping my promise to reduce the data reporting burden on schools and school districts, I am announcing the suspension of the California School Technology Survey (CSTS).

The valuable information provided through this survey will be obtained through existing data collections, such as the California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS) and the Online Public Update for Schools (OPUS). The California Department of Education (CDE) will continue to meet all state and federal data reporting requirements regarding technology and will also continue to provide schools, school districts, county offices of education, and other stakeholders with aggregated data reports on the technology and technological literacy in California.

Some school districts may want to continue to use this survey for their own purposes, but we will not require school districts to submit the survey results to the CDE. I sincerely hope that the effort to relieve the increasing data reporting burden on schools and districts will have a positive impact during these difficult financial times.

If you have any questions regarding this subject, please contact Cliff Rudnick, Manager, Education Technology Office, at 916-323-5072 or by e-mail at crudnick@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely

JACK O'CONNELL
