Teacher Training & Guest SpeakersProvides information regarding the legal requirement to provide teacher trainings and the ability of local educational agencies to contract with outside consultants.
New legislation has been enacted that will change Comprehensive Sexual Health Education and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education. The new laws go into effect January 1, 2016. Please check back soon for updates.
Comprehensive sexual health education and HIV/AIDS prevention education shall be taught by instructors trained in the appropriate courses. Education Code (EC) 51935 requires school districts to cooperatively plan and conduct in-service training for all teachers and school employees who provide HIV/AIDS prevention instruction. This in-service training shall be conducted periodically to enable staff to remain current with new developments in the scientific understanding of AIDS as well as with new prevention education techniques. This training may be expanded to cover comprehensive sexual health education.
Please contact your local county office of education to inquire about trainings.
EC 51936 permits school districts to contract with guest speakers to provide comprehensive sexual health education and HIV/AIDS prevention education. If school districts do use outside consultants, their instruction shall comply with all requirements listed in EC 51933 and 51934.
Please refer to the Checklist for Guest Speakers.
