Joining SHAPE California

Information about how to join Shaping Health as Partners in Education (SHAPE) California.

If your district is interested in joining the SHAPE California network, there are two options available. The first is to volunteer to join, which can be done at any time by following the procedures listed below. The second is to submit an application for funding in response to the Request For Applications that the California Department of Education issues periodically. Due to the uncertainty of funding, we are unable to project when the next grant cycle will occur. Please note that if you choose to join the network as a volunteer, you may also apply for grant funding whenever such funds are available. Join the Funding Mailing List to be notified by e-mail when funding becomes available.

Volunteering to Join SHAPE California

To join, you must submit a letter of request stating that you will:

  1. Read the materials provided.
  2. Identify at least two partners in your district, one from the child nutrition program and the other representing teachers, health services, or administrators, to direct the SHAPE California effort.
  3. Agree to actively implement this approach according to the Criteria for Maintaining Active Participation.
  4. Begin implementing a menu planning method, other than the Traditional Meal Pattern 1994-1995, listed on the Comparison of Menu Planning Options (Lunch) for SHAPE California Agencies (DOC).

Child Nutrition Program sponsors who do not participate in SHAPE California may not use the SHAPE NSMP or SHAPE Revised Meal Pattern meal planning options.

After the letter of request is received, you will be contacted by a member of our SHAPE California team to establish a date and time to provide a half-day orientation to the SHAPE California approach. The orientation must be attended by both district partners. The location will be determined by the number of districts within the area that are also ready to join. Attendance may require travel on your part or the orientation may be held within your district.

Is your district committed to the belief that children and youth need to be well nourished and healthy to be ready to learn and to achieve their fullest potential? Is your district willing to work with students, parents, and the community to ensure that students have access to healthy food choices and that systems are in place to support their overall health? Joining SHAPE California will provide you with the support you need to achieve your vision. Commitment to this shared responsibility calls for a team approach for its successful implementation. School board members, administrators, parents, teachers, students, nurses, child nutrition staff, and support staff all are encouraged to join together with community partners in promoting a healthy school environment conducive to learning.

We appreciate your interest in joining SHAPE California.
