Subject: Annual Mandatory Summer Food Service Program Training
Reference: Title 7, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 225.7(a)

The California Department of Education (CDE), Nutrition Services Division (NSD), is announcing the annual mandatory training for all new and returning Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) agencies. All sponsors must participate in this annual training before the NSD will approve your SFSP participation.

Note: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Free 2011 Summer Food Service Program Webinar series is NOT part of the NSD mandated training for SFSP. This mandatory training information does NOT apply to school districts who implement the Seamless Summer Feeding Option.

The NSD is offering Webinar training or workshop training for new SFSP sponsors. For returning SFSP sponsors, there is an additional option to complete the mandatory training online. Please read below for more details on the training options.

New SFSP Sponsors

New SFSP sponsors must participate in either a Webinar or workshop training.

Webinar Training – Each training series includes three Webinar sessions. Each session will last approximately three hours. All three sessions are required to fulfill the training requirement. The Webinars are on the following dates:

Training Session I

Training Session II

Training Session III

Workshop Training – The workshops are approximately eight hours in length and are located in northern Los Angeles County on April 6, 2011, San Diego County on April 28, 2011, and Solano County on May 6, 2011.

The workshop and Webinar agenda will include key topics such as eligibility, meal counting and claiming, menu planning, food safety, civil rights, reaching out to the community, and the administrative review process. Each sponsor is required to complete a post-test on the presentations that is due to the NSD by May 13, 2011.

Returning SFSP Sponsors

Returning SFSP Sponsors that are in good standing may fulfill the annual mandatory training requirement by completing the Webinar Training, the Workshop Training, or by completing the Online Training.

Online Training – In partnership with the California Professional Nutrition Education and Training (Cal-Pro-NET) Center at San Jose State University, the CDE developed an online training for returning SFSP sponsors.

The online training includes mandatory modules on key topics such as eligibility, meal counting and claiming, menu planning, food safety, civil rights, reaching out to the community, and the administrative review process. Additionally, there is a quiz for each topic, and a sponsor evaluation of the training.

The NSD anticipates that the training will be available by the end of March 2011.

The NSD will send out a notification, via e-mail, that will announce when the online training is available. Your agency must complete the online training by May 13, 2011.

Note: Returning sponsors not in good standing (e.g. were deemed seriously deficient/problematic, and/or had systemic errors in their 2009/2010 administrative review, and/or have new staff in a key administrative position [Executive Director, Administrator, or Authorized Representative]) must participate in the New SFSP Training options (Webinar or workshop).
