This Information Alert provides Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) sponsors pertinent information for serving nutritious meals to children during a natural disaster.
All SFSP sponsors in good standing may:
- Serve meals outside of the approved meal service times;
- Serve above the approved average daily participation/capacity;
- Establish/operate the number of sites that can be managed and safely
operated according to SFSP requirements; - Establish a site during a natural disaster by submitting a Site Information Sheet;
- Request a waiver from serving complete meals; and
- Not operate sites where an emergency shelter is in operation.
Sponsors wishing to operate sites during a natural disaster, but have serious deficiencies in their operation of the SFSP, will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Sponsors who may experience a financial impact due to non-reimbursable food costs can donate food items to a recognized homeless/emergency shelter. In order to claim the costs of the donated food, a receipt must be obtained from the receiving agency.
