The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has advised the California Department of Education (CDE) that it has extended to the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) the Child and Adult Care Food Program provision that allows a site to be area eligible for up to five years when the determination is based on National School Lunch Program (NSLP) eligibility data. The provision has been extended to the NSLP in relation to Seamless Summer Feeding Option sites and applying it to the SFSP provides for consistent administration across Program lines.
The following procedures apply:
- SFSP sponsors of sites previously determined to be area-eligible based upon school data are now allowed to re-determine site eligibility every five years instead of every three years.
- During site approvals for the 2006-07 program year, the CDE extended by two years (for a total of five years) the area eligibility of sites currently participating on the basis of school meal eligibility data.
- Area-eligible sites (when eligibility determination was based upon school meal data) that would have required re-determination during the 2006-07 program year, must instead be re-determined during the 2008-09 program year.
- New sites determined to be area-eligible during the 2006-07 program year based upon school meal eligibility data will be considered eligible for up to five years from the date of determination.
