This Management Bulletin (MB) corrects the Traveling Apple policy referenced in MB 04-708: Summer Meal Service Program Clarifications and Changes, distributed in August 2004.
Background
The Nutrition Services Division distributed MB 04-708 allowing children to take a fruit, vegetable, or other nonperishable food item away from a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) site. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Policy Memorandum SA-9-3-1-CA was attached to the MB as guidance for implementing the policy.
Correction
Effective immediately, children may no longer take “other nonperishable” food items from the site. Children may only take a fruit or vegetable component of the meal away from the site. The food must have been from the child’s own meal or left on a sharing table by another child. Food items other than a fruit or vegetable leaving the site will cause the entire meal to be nonreimbursable. This information is consistent with USDA SFSP Policy Memorandum 3-98: SFSP Issues Relating to Meal Services at Sites.
Action
Immediately notify and train all monitors and site supervisors of this correction. Monitors must take corrective action when necessary.
