Subject: 2010-11 Income Eligibility Guidelines - UPDATE
Reference: United States Department of Agriculture Policy Memo SP 30-2010; Information Alert USDA-CNP-01-2010; Nutrition Services Division Listserv June 16, 2010

This Information Alert (IA) provides updated information regarding the 2010-11 Income Eligibility Guidelines (IEG) for the child nutrition programs (CNPs).

The federal Department of Health and Human Services released updated poverty guidelines on August 3, 2010; however, these guidelines do not change the current IEGs for the CNPs. Therefore, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) advises all CNP sponsors to continue using the 2009-10 IEGs for all eligibility determinations throughout the 2010-11 school year. The enclosed guidelines can also be found at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/rs/scales1011.asp.

Previously, the Nutrition Services Division disseminated guidance from the USDA allowing CNP sponsors to omit the IEGs from their 2010-11 household packets. However, since the 2010-11 IEGs are now available, sponsors may include the guidelines in all household meal/milk eligibility packets. If a sponsor has already sent out household eligibility packets—which include the letter to the household and free and reduced-price meal application—they do not need to send out additional communication reflecting the new IEGs.

If you have any questions regarding this IA, please contact your county specialist at 800-952-5609.
