Annual Mandatory Food Safety Inspection Data Collection
Response Due by October 30, 2010

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires the California Department of Education (CDE) Nutrition Services Division (NSD) to annually collect data from Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) regarding mandatory food safety inspections conducted at school sites that serve lunch and/or breakfast.

In order to comply with this mandatory food safety inspection data collection, all LEAs participating in federal School Nutrition Programs must complete the Food Safety Inspection Survey for the School Year (SY) 2009-10 via the Child Nutrition Information and Payment System (CNIPS) by October 30, 2010.

How to Access the Food Safety Inspection Survey via the CNIPS

Instructions for Completing the Mandatory Food Safety Inspection Survey

  1. Food Safety Inspections Performed in School Year 2009-10
Item 1a: Number of Food Safety Inspections Performed:
From the drop down menu provided, select the number of food safety inspections performed at each of your district/agency’s sites by the local or County Environmental Health Department. If you select “none” or “one,” you must complete Item 1b for that site. If you select “two” or “three or more,” you do not need to complete Item 1b for that site.
Item 1b: Reason for Fewer Than Two Inspections Conducted:
If you selected “none” or “one” in Item 1a for a site, select from the drop down menu one of the four reasons listed or select “other” and enter the reason in the space provided. If more than one reason applies, select the most predominant reason why “none” or “one” inspection was conducted at that site. Do not complete Item 1b if “two” or “three or more” was selected in Item 1a.
For Residential Child Care Institutions (RCCIs):
From the drop down menu provided, select “none” to report zero inspections. Select “other” as the reason code and enter the specific reason as “RCCIs are exempt in CA.”
  2. Certification
Read the certification statement and type in your full name, title, e-mail address and telephone number in the spaces provided. Select Save to automatically submit the Food Safety Inspection Survey to the NSD.
