Information Alert: Reimbursement Reduction

Nutrition Services Division Information Alert

To: School Nutrition Program Sponsors (Public Schools, Charter Schools, and County Offices of Education)

Number: NSD-SNP-05-2010

Attention: Business Officials, Food Service Directors

Date: April 2010
Subject: Update: Reduction in State Meal Reimbursement Rate for Fiscal Year 2009-10

This Information Alert (IA) updates the Proposition (Prop) 98 State Meal notifications the California Department of Education (CDE) sent in August 2009, related to State Meal reimbursement. At that time, the appropriation for Fiscal Year (FY) 2009-10 did not appear sufficient to support the statutory reimbursement rate of $0.2195 for all projected eligible meals served through the school nutrition programs. It was estimated that the reimbursement rate could potentially be reduced for the claim months of May 2010 and June 2010.

Current year projections indicate that reimbursement for meals served in May 2010 will need to be reduced to $0.20. Also, it is unlikely that funds will be sufficient to provide any reimbursement for meals served in June 2010.

Therefore, Prop 98 agencies should be aware of and plan for the following:

Please note that meals claimed through the Child and Adult Care Food Program will remain at $0.1634 for the entire FY 2009-2010 (through June 2010).

While the CDE is working with the Legislature to obtain funding needed to fully reimburse State Meal reimbursement claims throughout the year, the CDE encourages school nutrition program sponsors to plan appropriately for this uncertain fiscal situation.
