This Management Bulletin (MB) reminds Child Nutrition Program sponsors about the Child Nutrition (CN) Labeling Program requirements.
Recently, the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has received an increase in requests for CN labels for bakery and fruit/vegetable products. Please be aware that the CN Labeling Program for food-based menu planning is limited to the following items:
- Entrée items that contribute at least 0.5 ounces equivalent meat/meat alternate toward the meal pattern requirements—examples of these products include, but are not limited to, beef patties, cheese or meat pizzas, meat or cheese and bean burritos, egg rolls, and breaded fish
- Fifty percent juice drinks and juice drink products such as grape juice, fruit juice, and juice bars
Manufacturers are not allowed to place a CN label on any of their products unless it is authorized by the USDA. In addition, manufacturers must have quality control procedures and inspection oversight that meet the FNS requirements.
For more information on the USDA CN Labeling Program, please visit the USDA CN Labeling Web page at http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/cnlabeling/background.htm.
