2005-06 Language Data for District and Schools by Language Groups
California Education Code Section 48985(a) specifies that when 15 percent or more of the students enrolled in a public school speak a single primary language other than English, a school is required to send home parental notifications in both English and the non-English language.
The statistics appearing in the reports below are taken from DataQuest, the CDE’s online searchable data resource. The reports list by language group the number of students speaking a language other than English that constituted 15 percent or more of a school’s enrollment during the year cited above. Pursuant to Education Code Section 48985, the data indicate the languages for which translations of parental notifications are required. The percentages reflect the information reported by districts to the CDE in the California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS) report and the Spring Language Census, or R-30.
Districts may need to consider more recent enrollment information for their schools, current trends of immigration into the local community, and similar factors, in order to gain a more current indication of the language groups for which translations are needed.
