Agenda items are based upon topics raised by TAG members at the last meeting.
- Approval of minutes from the meeting of April 20, 2006
- Public comment
This agenda item is included for the purpose of giving anyone in attendance an opportunity to ask questions or discuss non-agenda items with the advisory group.
- Update from CDE
Keric Ashley, Director, Data Management Division, will make available two data reports that may be of assistance to the TAG in future meetings. Tom Adams will update the TAG on translations contractors. Rod Atkinson and Wayne Shimizu will give a brief report on recent outreach efforts, steps to improve public access to the Clearinghouse for Multilingual Documents (CMD), and the scope of the CMD.
- The charge and scope of the Translations Advisory Group
Sue Stickel will review with members the charge to the TAG and may lead a discussion about the scope of the TAG’s work.
- Topics for discussion
The topics listed below are based upon requests or recommendations by TAG members during the April 20 meeting and are listed here for possible discussion.
- Outreach: The CDE requests suggestions from TAG members for CDE outreach during 2006-07:
- Local needs regarding parental notifications and translations:What are TAG members’ perspectives regarding the needs of LEAs, parents, and community groups? Are these needs ones that can be addressed within the scope of the Clearinghouse? If not, what recommendations do you have for how other advisory or community groups might meet them?
- Gaps:
What procedures do TAG members want to use to identify gaps? Or is this a question that should be revisited after the CMD inventory has been increased? What gaps do you perceive, either in terms of documents or languages?
- Criteria for making decisions:
Aside from identifying gaps, are there other criteria that TAG members propose to use to determine their priorities among languages or documents? The TAG Members and the public are welcome to provide suggestions for possible additions to the list of proposed translations made by CDE division offices.
- Copyrights:
The CDE has made an effort to highlight copyrights as a procedural issue for districts who share documents on the CMD database. Sue Stickel’s letter of March 13 and the CMD’s disclaimer language draw attention to this issue. Are there any recommendations from TAG members relative to copyrights as the issue relates to the CMD?
- Reading level in translations:
Is there a need to match translations to different levels of readership? Is this issue better addressed by first ensuring that source documents are written at a reasonable reading level prior to translation?
- Resolving differences among translators:
How can the CDE best resolve issues of accuracy and quality when qualified contractors do not agree? What factors must be taken into account?
- Standardized forms:
Mention was made at the last meeting of interest in “standardized forms.” For the purpose of clarification, what do TAG members see as the meaning of this term?
- Additional discussion issues identified by TAG members for this meeting
This agenda item provides an opportunity for TAG members to raise and/or discuss other issues not formally on the agenda but within the group's purview. No action will be taken, and some issues may need to be deferred to future meetings.

The presiding officer and TAG members will project date options for the next meeting and will brainstorm possible topics for future discussion or recommendation.

Visitor parking is available in State Parking Lot #14, located at 1517 13th Street (between 13th and 14th streets). The entrance to the parking structure is on 13th Street. There are approximately 80 rooftop spaces that have been identified for visitors to use. The rate is $1.25 per half an hour. Parking hours are from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and a parking attendant is on site.
