Bullying by students and its negative effects erode students' ability to learn. Additionally, the link between bullying and later delinquent and criminal behavior has been documented by research in both the United States and abroad.
Acts of school violence that are brought to our attention by the media are disturbing and we cannot imagine how anyone so early in life could do so much damage and create such destruction and grief. On the other hand, daily incidents of school bullying and hate-motivated behavior is perversely viewed as part of what children experience as they grow up.
Recent research in the United States and abroad has shown that bullying is more common and more potentially damaging to children than previously thought. Studies also show a definite link between bullying and later delinquent and criminal behavior. Bullying is recognized as behavior that can span from minor offenses like name-calling, fist fights, and social exclusion to more serious criminal acts of libel, repeated physical attacks, and sexual harassment.
