Utility Bus Specifications

Over the past several years, the public's need for traditional mass transit service and additional alternative transportation service has increased significantly. Within this environment, the California Department of Education began a program to design and build a heavy-duty integral transit style, utility school bus using currently available technology, and merging the best features of vehicles from the mass transit and school bus industries.

The purpose of the Utility Bus program was to demonstrate that a passenger, operator, maintenance, and environmentally friendly vehicle, operationally flexible and fiscally practicable, could be a reality. Within all of these operational and fiscal considerations, the Utility Bus would above all else have to provide the highest level of passenger and public safety. The California Utility Bus is the final product of that program.
