Notice 1 to LEAs regarding SERS data collection

Letter Head: Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, California Department of Education

December 3, 2012

Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:

UPCOMING REQUIRED REPORTING: STAFF EVALUATION REPORTING SYSTEM

On December, 17, 2012, the California Department of Education (CDE) will begin collecting data for the 2012 Staff Evaluation Reporting System (SERS). SERS replaces the Great Teachers and Principals Survey that was used in 2010 and 2011 to collect data regarding the system used to evaluate the performance of teachers and principals, the number of teachers and principals, and the overall performance rating of teachers and principals, which was required as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The U.S. Department of Education requires State Educational Agencies to collect this data which will then be submitted to its Education Data Exchange Network (EDEN) in February 2013.

Using SERS, each local educational agency will submit the following data for the 2011–12 school year:

  • Information regarding the system used to evaluate the performance of teachers and principals

  • The overall performance evaluation rating (specifically: satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or not evaluated) for all teachers at each school

  • The overall performance evaluation rating (specifically: satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or not evaluated) for all principals district-wide

An e-mail will be sent on December 17, 2012, that will include SERS passwords, instructions, and timelines.

General information regarding SERS can be found on the School Staffing Report Web page at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/nclb/sr/tq/schlstfrpt.asp. If you have any questions regarding the Staff Evaluation Reporting System, please contact Anie Wilson, Associate Governmental Program Analyst, Title II Leadership Office by telephone at 916-445-5669 or by e-mail at awilson@cde.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

/s/
