July 26: In this Democratic weekly radio address, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell talks about the troubling report on California’s high school drop out rate and the need to support education funding to improve the state’s graduation rate. In the radio address Superintendent O'Connell says, "Now we must face the alarming news that one in four students is dropping out of our California public high schools. These alarming dropout rate numbers are in part a legacy of our state's embarrassingly low per-pupil funding. Among the fifty states, we consistently rank among the lowest ten." July 17: State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell congratulated four students from Mendota (Fresno County) for winning the junior high school division of the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) national competition last month in College Park, Maryland. May 1: The California Department of Education offers a PowerPoint presentation that outlines the state's unique challenges in its attempt to close the achievement gap.

February 27: State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, joined by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, announced his recommended course of action as required by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act for 97 school districts (local educational agencies, or LEAs) that have for five years not met student achievement targets.
