Dear County and District Superintendents and Charter School Administrators:
The California Department of Education (CDE), in collaboration with the California Education Round Table Intersegmental Coordinating Committee and the Campaign for College Opportunity, is pleased to invite your local educational agency (LEA) to join the Early Commitment to College (ECC) Program, a statewide college awareness initiative. The purpose of the ECC is to improve college readiness and college enrollment rates among low-income students and students attending high-poverty schools. The ECC program is strictly voluntary.
Through the ECC, students who meet eligibility requirements and apply to college gain access to the University of California system or the California State University system, and are guaranteed the opportunity to attend a California community college.
To join the ECC, please complete the attached Early Commitment to College 2010 Contact Form by September 15, 2010. (See Attachment 1.) ECC contacts are responsible for certifying that the student has completed the Save Me a Spot in College Pledge and to confirm the Statewide Student Identifier (SSID) of a student who has signed the Save Me a Spot in College Pledge. (See Attachment 2.) In addition, the ECC contact will be notified about important program information and ongoing college initiatives. Information about the ECC is provided in the attached Overview of Early Commitment to College Program (See Attachment 3). You can find information about the ECC on the CDE ECC Web page.
If you have any questions regarding this subject, please contact Carolyn Hamilton, Education Programs Consultant, Intersegmental Relations Office, by phone at 916-323-5765 or by e-mail at chamilton@cde.ca.gov.
Sincerely,
JACK O’CONNELL
