Dear County and District Superintendents, Charter School Administrators, and Interested Individuals and Organizations:

REQUEST FOR REVIEWERS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS

I am requesting your assistance in recruiting individuals to participate in the evaluation of supplemental English Language Development (ELD) instructional materials aligned to the new California ELD Standards adopted by the State Board of Education (SBE) on November 7, 2012.

Pursuant to Assembly Bill 1719, which was signed by the Governor on September 27, 2012, the ELD supplemental instructional materials review (ELD SIMR) will be conducted in 2013. The California Department of Education (CDE) and the SBE are seeking experienced education professionals to review the supplemental materials. The CDE will list on its Web site materials that are found to meet the ELD SIMR criteria as resources that can help local educational agencies in their transition to the California ELD Standards.

Reviewers will evaluate the ELD supplemental instructional materials for alignment to the new California ELD Standards and the ELD SIMR evaluation criteria, pending approval by the SBE at their March 13–14, 2013, meeting. Reviewers will attend a   two-day training held at the San Joaquin County Office of Education on July 18–19, 2013. They will review supplemental instructional materials independently at home and will then reconvene in panels in San Joaquin for two to three days of deliberations and the preparation of a report of findings on November 14–16, 2013.

Travel costs for attending the above meetings will be reimbursed; however, there is no stipend or honorarium provided for service as a reviewer. Districts will be eligible for reimbursement of substitute costs for current classroom teachers for the days of meetings in Stockton.

All interested in being reviewers can find more details and submit their information via an online application on the CDE’s ELD SIMR Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/cf/eldsimr.asp which will be posted on January 15, 2013. The deadline for submission of applications is March 15, 2013. Please forward this information to any and all qualified candidates in your schools or organizations who might be interested in serving on these panels.
